Leave it...
Omg, omg, omg…it’s the doorbell. In comes an incredibly delicious smelling human. I smell chicken, no bacon, wait…that’s liverwurst!!! She turns away, supposedly ignoring me, but that smell…Mommy puts me in sit-stay and I get rewarded with…is that hot dog? from the stranger. Okay, you got me now. I will do absolutely anything for another bite of hot dog and am sitting at attention. Next thing I know, she’s throwing down a milkbone (you know the cheap kind they give at bank drive thru’s, veterinary offices and even the mailman sprinkles them around liberally). She says “leave it”, as if I would jump at a milkbone, so I do and just look at her. She says yes and seems pleased and the best part is that she gives me another bite of that hotdog. Yum! We do this a few more times (honestly, I could do this all day) then a cheese stick is thrown on the floor. “Leave it”, she commands and now I’m thinking…do I hold out for more hotdog or go for that cheesestick? Heck, I can smell it’s low-fat cheese and that hotdog in her hand is real beef. Believe me, I just know these things. Go for the beef, go for the beef, my mind chants so, I ignore the cheesestick and she seems so ridiculously happy and gives me the bite of beef hotdog. I figure I like this “training” and am going to be real good at it. I hear the next step is “drop it”. Hmmm, that should be interesting…
